Analysis

Max Holloway is one of the most active fighters in the history of the UFC featherweight division. He was the division’s champion from 2016 to 2020, then held the BMF belt from 2024 to 2026. His reputation rests on a rare striking volume and on a durability that lets him go the distance in almost every fight.

Background

Born on December 4, 1991 in Honolulu, Max Holloway grew up in Waianae, on the west coast of Oahu. He turned pro at lightweight in 2010, then dropped to featherweight in 2012, the division where he would spend most of his career. He trains between Gracie Technics and Legacy Muay Thai and holds a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Pedro Sauer. The bonuses came early: Knockout of the Night on January 4, 2014, then Performance of the Night on October 4, 2014 and August 26, 2015. In thirty-seven pro fights, he has been stopped only twice.

UFC career

On December 10, 2016, Holloway won the interim featherweight title and picked up another Performance of the Night. He unified the belt on June 3, 2017, in a fight that earned Fight of the Night. His reign ended on July 12, 2020 against Alexander Volkanovski, by split decision at UFC 251. He lost to the Australian again on July 2, 2022 at UFC 276, by unanimous decision, which pushed him to look for opportunities outside his original division.

On April 13, 2024, at UFC 300, he knocked out Justin Gaethje in the final seconds of the fifth round to win the BMF belt. The finish was named 2024 Knockout of the Year and the bout earned a Fight of the Night bonus. On October 26, 2024, at UFC 308, he was knocked out by Ilia Topuria. He then kept the BMF title on July 19, 2025 at UFC 318, and lost it on March 7, 2026 to Charles Oliveira, by unanimous decision at UFC 326. On July 11, 2026, he met Conor McGregor again at UFC 329 and won in the first round after the Irishman hurt his knee.

Fighting style

Holloway builds everything on volume boxing. He walks forward, throws long combinations and raises the pace round after round rather than hunting for an early finish. His cardio and his control of distance explain why so many of his wins come on the scorecards, thirteen out of twenty-eight, the same number as his stoppages by strikes. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, he mostly uses his grappling defensively, to get back up and return the fight to the feet. That approach rarely exposes him on the ground, but it regularly drags him into long, close fights, which explains how many of his losses came by decision.
