Biography

Conor Anthony McGregor was born on July 14, 1988, in Dublin, Ireland. Before becoming one of the most recognized figures in combat sports worldwide, he grew up in the Crumlin neighborhood and took up boxing as a teenager, before turning to MMA under John Kavanagh at SBG Ireland.

His rise on the international stage was meteoric. After dominating the European circuit, he signed with the UFC in 2013 and quickly established a precise striking game, controlled fighting distance and a finishing ability that earned him a worldwide reputation. In December 2015, he made history by knocking out Jose Aldo in 13 seconds, the fastest knockout ever recorded in a UFC title fight.

In 2016, McGregor became the UFC’s first simultaneous two-division champion, holding the featherweight and lightweight belts at the same time. His popularity reached far beyond MMA: he became the highest-paid fighter in the sport’s history, driven by memorable rivalries with Nate Diaz and Khabib Nurmagomedov, and by a flair for showmanship that helped bring MMA to a global audience.

After his submission loss to Khabib at UFC 229 in 2018 and a broken leg suffered in his third fight with Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in 2021, McGregor stayed inactive for several years. After announcing surgery and targeting one last fight, he returned to competition on July 11, 2026, at UFC 329 against Max Holloway, in a bout contested at welterweight.

Memorable fights

vs. Jose Aldo: UFC 194 (2015). Thirteen seconds. A single left hand. McGregor ended Aldo’s five-year unbeaten reign and took the featherweight belt in what remains the fastest knockout in UFC title fight history.

vs. Nate Diaz: UFC 202 (2016). An epic rematch after the upset loss at UFC 196. McGregor adjusted his tactical approach and won a majority decision in a war that confirmed his ability to adapt under pressure.

vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov: UFC 229 (2018). One of the most anticipated fights in UFC history. McGregor held off Khabib’s takedown attempts better than expected before being submitted by rear naked choke in the fourth round. The fight and its aftermath (post-fight brawl, suspensions) left a lasting mark on the promotion’s history.

vs. Max Holloway: UFC 329 (July 11, 2026). In his return after nearly five years of inactivity, McGregor lost by first-round TKO (1:09) following a knee injury. The Irish fighter has since asked for the loss to be overturned to a no-contest, with no official ruling issued to date.
