MMA rules explained: rounds, scoring, fouls and ways to win a fight

In short

  • A standard pro fight is three five-minute rounds; title fights and UFC main events go five.
  • Fights end by KO, TKO, submission, judges’ decision or disqualification.
  • Three judges score each round on the 10-point must system.
  • Headbutts, eye pokes, groin strikes and blows to the back of the head are illegal.
  • Most promotions follow the Unified Rules of MMA, first drafted in New Jersey in 2000.

MMA still carries a reputation as a sport without rules, a leftover from the first UFC tournaments in 1993, which had no gloves, no weight classes and barely any time limits. Today almost every major promotion works from the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts, drafted by New Jersey’s athletic board in 2000 and adopted by U.S. commissions over the following years.

How long is an MMA fight?

A standard professional bout is three rounds of five minutes with a one-minute break between rounds. Championship fights, and UFC main events, run five rounds of five minutes. Amateur bouts often use three-minute rounds and more protective gear.

Ways to win

ResultWhat happens
KOA legal strike leaves the opponent unconscious
TKOThe referee stops the fight because a fighter can no longer defend intelligently, or the doctor rules them unable to continue
SubmissionA fighter taps out, or is choked unconscious
Unanimous decisionAll three judges score it for the same fighter
Split decisionTwo judges for one fighter, one for the other
Majority decisionTwo judges for one fighter, the third scores a draw
DisqualificationA deliberate or repeated foul ends the fight
No contestThe result is voided, for instance after an early accidental foul or a failed drug test

A verbal submission counts too: a fighter who screams in pain in a joint lock can be ruled to have given up.

How judges score a fight

Three cageside judges score each round separately. The winner of the round gets 10 points, the loser 9. A round with clear domination, where one fighter is in serious trouble for much of it, can be scored 10-8, more rarely 10-7.

Judges look first at effective striking and grappling, meaning damage and progress toward ending the fight. Only if that is even do they weigh effective aggression, then control of the fighting area. A takedown that leads nowhere counts for less than strikes that land clean. A fighter who wins every round of a three-round fight gets a 30-27 card.

Fouls

The main ones:

  • headbutts;
  • eye gouges and eye pokes;
  • groin strikes;
  • strikes to the spine or the back of the head;
  • throat strikes and grabbing the trachea;
  • small joint manipulation of fingers and toes;
  • kicks and knees to the head of a grounded opponent;
  • biting, hair pulling, fish-hooking;
  • grabbing the fence or the opponent’s shorts;
  • abusive language in the cage.

An opponent is grounded when anything other than the soles of the feet touches the canvas. That definition decides whether a knee to the head is legal, and it sparks regular controversy. A foul can bring a warning, a point deduction or a disqualification. A fighter hit with an accidental low blow gets up to five minutes to recover.

How other promotions differ

ONE Championship, based in Singapore, allows knees to the head of a grounded opponent and judges the fight as a whole rather than round by round. The old PRIDE organization in Japan, which folded in 2007, allowed soccer kicks and stomps and used a ten-minute first round.

MMA in France

Professional MMA competition was banned in France until 2020, which forced French fighters to compete abroad. It is now regulated by a national federation, and the UFC has held events in Paris since 2022. Amateur competition in France uses stricter rules, with more protective gear and limits on strikes depending on level.
