Biography

Khabib Abdulmanapovich Nurmagomedov was born on September 20, 1988, in Sildi, a village in Dagestan that was then part of the USSR. The son of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov (a renowned combat coach in the region), he grew up surrounded by wrestling and sambo from childhood, also practicing judo and freestyle fighting. His father was both his first coach and the architect of the system that would make him one of the most dominant fighters in MMA history.

After an MMA career that began in Russia in 2008, Khabib joined the UFC in 2012. His rise was methodical and flawless: 13 consecutive wins in the UFC, without ever convincingly losing a single round. His style (elite wrestling, constant pressure, devastating ground and pound, submissions from control) had a systematic efficiency that few opponents managed to disrupt.

UFC lightweight champion from 2018 to 2021, Khabib retired in October 2020 after submitting Justin Gaethje at UFC 254, following the death of his father Abdulmanap, who died of Covid-19 a few months earlier. He left the sport with a perfect record of 29 wins and 0 losses, and was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame on June 30, 2022. Fight Matrix ranks him among the top 15 pound-for-pound fighters of all time.

Memorable Fights

vs. Conor McGregor: UFC 229 (2018). The most anticipated fight in the division. Khabib neutralized McGregor on the ground from the first round, piled up control time and submitted the Irishman with a rear-naked choke in the fourth round. The fight was followed by a brawl involving both camps: a moment that left a lasting mark on UFC history.

vs. Dustin Poirier: UFC 242 (2019). Khabib defended his belt in Abu Dhabi with the same systematic efficiency. He submitted Poirier with a rear-naked choke in the third round after total domination on the ground, confirming that no opponent in the division had an answer to his style.

vs. Justin Gaethje: UFC 254 (2020). His final fight. Against one of the most dangerous strikers in the division, Khabib absorbed a few shots but quickly imposed his grappling and submitted Gaethje with a triangle choke in the second round. He announced his retirement immediately after the fight, inside the Octagon.
