Preston LaGrange Shocks Unbeaten Nell Ariano to Earn UFC Contract on Contender Series

American Preston LaGrange needed only one round to shock unbeaten Frenchman Nell Ariano on Dana White’s Contender Series, Season 10, Week 9, at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas on October 6, 2026. LaGrange, who took the fight on two weeks’ notice and a full weight class above his usual range, walked away with a UFC contract after being listed as a heavy betting underdog.

A late replacement and a weight-class jump

Nell Ariano was originally scheduled to face unbeaten Russian Ivan Gnizditskiy. According to RMC Sport, Gnizditskiy withdrew from the bout, and the promotion turned to Preston LaGrange as a replacement. Ariano, unbeaten as a professional and fighting out of Cage Warriors, stands 6 feet 4 inches (193 centimeters) and had been competing below light heavyweight. He moved up a full weight class to take the fight.

The Contender Series is the program Dana White runs every year to find future UFC talent outside the usual free-agent pipeline. Several bouts take place each week at the UFC APEX, without a crowd, in front of a small panel White himself chairs. A convincing winner can leave that same night with a contract, regardless of whether they entered as the betting favorite.

Most fighters who sign off the show enter as the favorite on paper, since matchmakers typically pair a hopeful against an opponent with a thinner résumé. LaGrange’s path stood out from that pattern. He jumped up in weight, took the fight on short notice, and still walked out with the result that mattered most to his career.

A back and forth finish

LaGrange accepted the bout on two weeks’ notice and a full weight class above his usual range, weighing in at 199.5 pounds (90.5 kilograms). Oddsmakers had him as a heavy underdog against Ariano, who entered as the night’s presumed favorite. The fight nonetheless opened in Ariano’s favor, as the Frenchman took LaGrange down in the opening exchanges and worked to advance toward a submission.

LaGrange scrambled back to his feet, and the two traded in the center of the cage. When Ariano threw a hook, LaGrange countered with a right hand and a follow-up flurry that backed Ariano against the fence. The referee stepped in at the 2:24 mark of round one to wave off the fight on strikes.

Four UFC contracts awarded in Las Vegas

LaGrange was one of four fighters to earn a UFC contract on a five-fight card. American Sal Everett, a UFC employee and assistant to Dana White, knocked out Ozzy Martin in the first round of his professional debut. Roque Conceição submitted Alexander Chavez with a triangle choke, and Mateus Soares stopped Ryuho Miyaguchi on strikes, both also in round one. Alivia Bierley won her bout against Summer Onley by decision but was not awarded a contract.

Sal Everett’s story stood out on the card. He works inside the UFC’s own offices and serves as an assistant to Dana White, and he turned pro and signed with the organization that already employs him on the same night. He battered Martin with punches until the referee stepped in during round one, extending an unbeaten amateur run into his professional debut, a detail that gave the broadcast one of its more unusual storylines of the week.

What comes next

Asked about the short turnaround to prepare for the fight, LaGrange said he is always ready and had taken the bout on two weeks’ notice. He added that he was excited to be there and ready to put on a show for the UFC, the organization whose contract he now carries after entering the card as a heavy outsider.

For Ariano, the loss ends an unbeaten run built at Cage Warriors against increasingly tough opposition. The late opponent change and the jump in weight class do not fully explain the outcome on their own. The Frenchman controlled much of the opening minute before being caught on the feet, and his next step will be adjusting his striking defense before any new push toward a UFC contract. The result adds another name to the current run of UFC results shaping the roster ahead of the promotion’s next cards, tracked alongside the rest of the 2026 UFC schedule.
