Analysis

Valentina Shevchenko has ruled the UFC women’s flyweight division like few fighters have ruled any division: seven title defenses in her first reign, then a second reign from 2024 with two more defenses. She tops the official women’s pound-for-pound rankings of September 19, 2026. An injury forced her out of UFC 332 on October 3, where Natália Silva and Wang Cong fight for the belt.

Background

Born on March 7, 1988, in Frunze, now Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, she started taekwondo at five and Muay Thai and kickboxing at twelve, winning eight IFMA Muay Thai world gold medals between 2003 and 2014, a WAKO world title and 57 of 60 kickboxing bouts. She trains with Pavel Fedotov at Tiger Muay Thai.

UFC career

She won the vacant flyweight title against Joanna Jędrzejczyk on December 8, 2018, defended it seven times, and lost it to Alexa Grasso by submission on March 4, 2023. She took it back from Grasso at UFC 306 on September 14, 2024, then beat Manon Fiorot at UFC 315 and Zhang Weili at UFC 322, both by decision.
