Amanda Nunes is the first woman to have held two UFC belts at the same time, at bantamweight and featherweight. Retired as champion in June 2023 and inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2025, the Brazilian has announced her return and is scheduled to face Kayla Harrison on November 14, 2026, at UFC 334.
Amanda Lourenço Nunes was born on May 30, 1988, in Pojuca, in the state of Bahia, Brazil. She first aimed for a soccer career before following her sister Vanessa into a dojo at sixteen. There she discovered Brazilian jiu-jitsu and boxing as the only woman in the gym, and lived there during the early years of her training.
Trained at Team Carvalho, she then moved through AMA Fight Club and MMA Masters before joining American Top Team in 2014, where she works with Mike Brown. She first fought in Invicta FC, where she lost to Sarah D’Alelio in January 2013, then signed with the UFC.
After a loss to Cat Zingano at UFC 178 in 2014, Nunes strung together wins over Shayna Baszler, Sara McMann and Valentina Shevchenko. On July 9, 2016, at UFC 200, she became bantamweight champion by submitting Miesha Tate with a first-round rear-naked choke. She then defended her belt against Ronda Rousey, stopped in 48 seconds at UFC 207, and then against Shevchenko, Raquel Pennington, Holly Holm and Germaine de Randamie.
On December 29, 2018, at UFC 232, she knocked out Cris Cyborg and became the first woman to hold two UFC titles simultaneously. She defended the featherweight title against Felicia Spencer and then Megan Anderson. On December 11, 2021, at UFC 269, she lost the bantamweight belt to a rear-naked choke from Julianna Peña, before winning it back by unanimous decision at UFC 277 in July 2022.
Her most recent fight to date, a decision win over Irene Aldana at UFC 289 on June 10, 2023, came with the announcement of her retirement. She relinquished her titles on June 20, 2023, becoming the only fighter in UFC history to retire as champion of two divisions. On June 5, 2025, after two years away, she announced her return. The title fight against Harrison, first announced for UFC 324 in January 2026 and then for UFC 331 in September 2026, has been postponed twice and is now set for November 14, 2026, at UFC 334.
Nunes is above all a striker: thirteen of her twenty-three wins came by KO or TKO, and her right hand ended the fights against Rousey and Cyborg. Her jiu-jitsu remains an effective complement, with four submissions to her name, including the one that earned her first title against Tate. She shares with Shevchenko the record for most title fight wins by a woman, eleven.
