Americans on the card

Liz Carmouche headlines for the United States, fighting for the inaugural women’s flyweight world title after a long career that included a UFC title shot. Further down the card, unbeaten French prospect Oualy Tandia takes on JP Saint Louis, who enters with 12 professional wins at welterweight.

What is at stake

Carmouche and Bishop close out a tournament season to crown the first PFL women’s flyweight world champion, a title with no precedent in the promotion. Unbeaten Timur Khizriev puts his perfect record on the line against Brazil’s Gabriel Braga in the co-main event at featherweight.

Oualy Tandia, the former Hexagone MMA welterweight champion who signed with the PFL in New York on July 28, makes his promotional debut against Saint Louis, a step up in competition for the 24-year-old. The rest of the main card features a mix of Eastern European, South American and American fighters, led by Sarvarjon Khamidov and Emiliano Sordi.

The nine-fight preliminary card includes two women’s flyweight bouts and three lightweight matchups, with several fighters making their professional debuts or fighting just their second or third pro bout, a typical PFL format that pairs established names with rising prospects on the same night.

For Tandia, the move represents a jump in competition after building an unbeaten record at home in France. Saint Louis, with more than double his opponent’s number of professional fights, gives the French prospect an early measuring stick as he adjusts to PFL competition.

Unlike the UFC’s continuous rankings, the PFL runs seasonal tournaments in several weight classes, with the winner of each division’s playoff taking home a one million dollar prize. The women’s flyweight title fought for in Chicago is a new addition to the list of divisions the promotion crowns each year, giving Friday’s main event added weight beyond a standard title fight.
