Shamil Musaev is a Russian welterweight from Dagestan, who went unbeaten for thirteen years before competing for the inaugural PFL welterweight title in 2026. Trained in wushu sanda from childhood, he won the 2024 PFL welterweight tournament before losing for the belt.
Shamil Musaev was born on January 8, 1994, in Kizlyar, Dagestan, Russia. He practiced wushu sanda from the age of six under Achalo Magomedaminov, became junior world champion in the discipline in 2012, and went on to collect several continental and national titles. He then turned to amateur MMA, becoming European champion in 2016 and world champion in 2017. He has trained since at Golden Team club in Mytishchi, in the Moscow oblast, under Vladimir Hosiya, alongside fighters such as Magomed Ismailov.
Shamil Musaev made his professional debut in June 2013, a TKO win over Muslim Mubarakshoev, then strung together wins on the Russian and Belarusian circuits. He won the M-1 Global Mix Fighter tournament in 2014, then continued his unbeaten run through a stint with Golden Team Championship and Fight Nights Global, where he notably beat Marat Khasanov by TKO in late 2018.
Shamil Musaev signed with Poland’s KSW in 2019, beating Hubert Szymajda and then Grzegorz Szulakowski, the latter by spinning backfist. He earned a contested decision over Uros Jurisic in January 2021, a fight marked by a Fight of the Night bonus and a post-fight brawl, then settled for a majority draw against Michal Pietrzak in October 2022. A planned KSW return was called off by the promotion, and Musaev returned to Russia’s RCC in July 2023, finishing Alexey Kunchenko by first-round TKO.
Shamil Musaev joined the PFL in April 2024 and won the season’s welterweight tournament, stringing together wins over Logan Storley, Murad Ramazanov twice, and Magomed Umalatov in the final, in Riyadh in November 2024. After more than a year out of action, he faced Ramazan Kuramagomedov for the inaugural PFL welterweight title on February 7, 2026, in Dubai, losing a hard-fought unanimous decision after five rounds, his first professional defeat. A title rematch against Thad Jean, scheduled for July 2026 in Washington, was called off after he withdrew over weight-cut complications. It remains his most recent confirmed event to date, alongside other welterweights in the promotion such as Johnny Eblen.
Shamil Musaev draws on a wushu sanda base, a Chinese discipline combining strikes and takedowns, which gives him a high finishing rate. His record includes several signature techniques from that discipline, including a spinning backfist and a spinning back kick, and a majority of his wins have come by KO or TKO. He is also credited with a wrestling base that complements his striking.
