Lucas Brennan is off the card at the UFC Apex on November 7. The featherweight tore his ACL deep into camp, and Carlos Calderon steps in to face Austin Bashi in one of eight preliminary bouts that night.
An injury replacement two weeks from fight night
Brennan and Bashi had been booked for weeks in a 145-pound (65.8 kg) featherweight bout. According to agentmma.com, the 26-year-old Brennan tore the ACL in his knee in the final two weeks of training camp, a tough break for a fighter already coming off a decision loss to Francis Marshall in April. The UFC confirmed the swap on its official site on November 4: Carlos Calderon replaces Brennan on the card for UFC Fight Night: Cortes Acosta vs. Walker, set for November 7 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. Bashi keeps his spot on the card but now has to adjust on short notice to a very different style of opponent.
Carlos Calderon gets a second shot after his Contender Series loss
Calderon, 31, stands 5-foot-11 (180 cm) and fights out of Aurora, Colorado, and finally earns his UFC contract after a winding road. He appeared on Dana White’s Contender Series in October 2024 and lost there by submission to Alberto Montes, a defeat that could have closed the door to the UFC for good. Instead he rebuilt on the regional circuit, mainly with Fury FC, going 5-1 in six fights since that loss. Three of those wins came by submission, including a guillotine choke in 1:35 over Justice Torres this past February. He most recently beat Lorram Esteves by unanimous decision on October 2. His professional record now stands at 11-4 with one no contest.
Austin Bashi has built his career on the submission
Bashi, 25, stands 5-foot-6 (167 cm) and trains out of Warrior Way Martial Arts in Michigan and brings a 14-2 record into Saturday’s fight. He knows the UFC’s unpredictable scheduling firsthand: his last outing, a decision loss to Jose Delgado in July, snapped a run that began with a first-round rear-naked choke over John Yannis the year before. Ten of his 14 wins have come by finish, six of them by rear-naked choke, the calling card of a fighter who hunts the submission the moment a fight hits the mat. Facing a late replacement with little name recognition, Bashi now has to game-plan for a different frame and style on just a few days’ notice.
A stacked Apex card headlined by Tatiana Suarez’s return
Calderon-Bashi is one of eight bouts added to a card topped by a heavyweight main event between the Dominican Republic’s Waldo Cortes Acosta and Brazil’s Johnny Walker. The main card also features the return of former strawweight title challenger Tatiana Suarez against Virna Jandiroba, plus the long-awaited UFC debut of Brazilian prospect Marcos Degli against Mitch Raposo at flyweight. On the prelims, Britain’s Davey Grant takes on American Elijah Smith at bantamweight, and Lithuania’s Mantas Kondratavicius meets American Andre Petroski at middleweight, rounding out a deep lineup for a Fight Night card. Prelims start at 5 p.m. ET / 2 p.m. PT on November 7, followed by the main card at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT, both streaming live on Paramount+ in the United States. For fans in the United Kingdom, that puts the main card at 1 a.m. on November 8, and at 2 a.m. in Central Europe.
Two records on the line after a late change
A win would push Calderon to 12-4 overall and confirm, two years after his Contender Series setback, that he belongs in the featherweight division. For Bashi, the stakes run the other way: stop a 1-2 stretch and show that his opponents’ instability hasn’t been the only factor behind his recent results. Both men will have had only a few days to adjust their camps to a new opponent, an increasingly familiar storyline on UFC Apex cards.
A torn ACL two weeks before fight night is a reminder that training exposes fighters to as much risk as competition itself.
