Oumar Kane Record, stats and next fight

Analysis

Oumar Kane, nicknamed Reug Reug, is a French-Senegalese fighter who reigned over the ONE Championship heavyweight division between November 2024 and May 2026. Coming from traditional Senegalese wrestling, he made his mark with his punching power against seasoned opponents on the Asian circuit.

Background

Born March 14, 1992, in Thiaroye, near Dakar, Oumar Kane grew up in Thiaroye-sur-Mer. At 16, he began mbapatte, the traditional Senegalese wrestling practiced by the Serer people, a discipline that shaped his physical conditioning and clinch work long before he took up mixed martial arts.

He turned professional in MMA on December 14, 2019, in Dakar, at Ares FC 1, defeating Sofiane Boukichou by TKO in the second round in the heavyweight division. Ares FC, an organization where Mickaël Lebout would also fight several times afterward, served as a springboard for Kane toward international organizations. He later settled in France, where he obtained French citizenship, following the path of another French-speaking heavyweight, Ciryl Gane.

ONE Championship Career

Kane made his debut with the Singapore-based organization on January 22, 2021, at ONE: Unbreakable 2, defeating Alain Ngalani by TKO in the first round. He followed up in April 2021 with a first-round TKO win over Patrick Schmid, before suffering his first loss that same month against Kirill Grishenko, stopped in the second round after a strike to the throat.

He returned to the win column in September 2022 against Batradz Gazzaev by second-round TKO, then won by unanimous decision in December 2022 against sambo specialist Jasur Mirzamukhamedov. In August 2023, he defeated Brazilian Marcus Almeida, known as Buchecha, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion turned MMA fighter, by unanimous decision, a performance that earned him a Performance of the Night bonus.

On November 9, 2024, at ONE 169, he faced heavyweight champion Anatoly Malykhin and defeated him by split decision, becoming the first MMA world champion from sub-Saharan Africa, alongside figures like Francis Ngannou in the landscape of African heavyweights. A first title defense against Malykhin, scheduled for November 2025, was canceled after a car accident sidelined Kane from competition. The rematch finally took place on May 15, 2026, at The Inner Circle in Bangkok, where Malykhin reclaimed his belt by fourth-round KO, before announcing his retirement as the organization’s three-time world champion.

Fighting Style

Kane’s style starts from his background in Senegalese wrestling, which gives him a solid anchor in the clinch and the ability to stuff opponents’ takedown attempts. Building on that foundation, he has developed punching power that accounts for four of his seven wins by KO or TKO, often earned by exploding in exchanges rather than building a prolonged game plan. His frame, 258 lbs (117 kg) at 6’0″ (183 cm) with a 6’6″ (198 cm) reach, gives him a marked physical advantage against most heavyweights on the Asian circuit.

His three decision wins, against opponents from sambo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu backgrounds, also show enough takedown defense to last five rounds without being dominated on the ground. He also has a brief stint in the organization’s kickboxing ranks, with a first-round KO win.
