Analysis

Abdoul Abdouraguimov, nicknamed “Lazy King,” is a French-Russian MMA fighter from Dagestan, based in France since his teenage years. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu and grappling specialist, he built most of his record on the French and then European circuits before joining the PFL (Professional Fighters League).

Background

Abdoul Abdouraguimov was born in Nizhny Dzhengutay, a village in Dagestan, within the Kumyk community. He left Russia at age 14, in 2009, to settle in France. It was in Nantes that he trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, at the De la Riva Nantes club, under coach Beto Ramos, where he earned his black belt. His professional MMA debut came first on the French circuit: he became welterweight champion of the 100% Fight promotion between 2016 and 2017, and was named 2017 Prospect of the Year by the site mma4fight.fr. Since July 2021, his career has been managed by Fernand Lopez, through the MMA Factory organization.

UFC Career

Abdoul Abdouraguimov has, to date, never fought under the UFC banner. His path has taken him through other major organizations on the European and international circuit. He joined the Brave Combat Federation, where he became welterweight world champion in April 2019, before losing his belt to Jarrah Al-Selawe. He then continued at the ARES Fighting Championship, where he became a two-division champion, in welterweight and middleweight, between 2021 and 2023. Since August 2023, he has competed under the PFL banner, making his debut there in September 2023 at the Zénith in Paris. His path fits into a broader movement of French fighters looking to break into the world’s biggest organizations, like Benoît Saint-Denis, already established at the UFC.

Fighting Style

Abdoul Abdouraguimov is above all a Brazilian jiu-jitsu and grappling specialist. Of his 20 career wins, 12 have come by submission, which makes up the majority of his record. His ground game and his ability to chain together position control make him a feared fighter once the fight hits the mat. This grappling focus recalls, in its technical logic, the profile of other Dagestani fighters who have made their mark on the sport, such as Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev, even though their career paths remain very different. In the welterweight division, the top of the world rankings is occupied by champions such as Jack Della Maddalena and Kamaru Usman, which gives an idea of the level targeted by the division’s international contenders.
