Technical Specs

The Everlast Elite Nevatear Heavy Bag 70 lbs sits above Everlast’s entry-level range. Its name says it all: the Nevatear shell (Everlast’s signature synthetic material) is its main point of difference from standard vinyl bags.

The Nevatear Shell: What Is It Really?

Nevatear is the trade name Everlast gives its high-strength synthetic shell. Unlike the standard vinyl used on entry-level bags, Nevatear is designed to withstand repeated abrasion from gloves, friction from hand wraps and elbow strikes without flaking or cracking over time.

In practice, this translates into two real advantages for MMA use: first, the surface is less harsh on gloves: standard vinyl wears out glove stitching faster than Nevatear. Second, the shell keeps its integrity on repeatedly struck zones (the chest-to-hip zone for kicks), where a cheap vinyl bag shows signs of blistering or peeling after 12 to 18 months of intensive use.

It is not genuine leather (leather remains superior in raw longevity and feel), but for home use 3 to 5 sessions a week, Nevatear is a serious compromise at a reasonable price.

Installation: A Dual-Strap System, Quieter Than a Chain

The Elite Nevatear stands out from many bags in its range with its dual-strap hanging system, in place of the classic metal chain. The carabiners and swivel come with the bag: you do not need to buy anything else to hang it.

The concrete advantage of straps over a chain is noise: a metal chain vibrates with every hit and transmits those vibrations to the ceiling and walls. In an apartment or a townhouse, that is a real problem. The strap system dampens part of that transmission and noticeably reduces the noise heard outside the room. Not a miracle solution, but a welcome difference.

The ceiling mount is up to you. The anchor point must support 3 to 4 times the bag’s weight under dynamic load: plan on an anchor rated for at least 265 to 330 lbs (120 to 150 kg). An M12 expansion anchor in concrete, or a certified wall bracket if you cannot drill into the ceiling. If you have any doubt about the load-bearing structure, consult a professional before installing.

The ideal hanging height for MMA: middle of the bag at solar plexus height. This lets you cover the high kick zone (head), mid kick zone (liver, ribs) and low kick zone (thigh) without repositioning the bag.

How It Feels to Hit: Punches, Elbows, Shins

The Elite Nevatear’s fiber and sifted sand filling offers firm, even resistance. It feels like a well-filled bag, with no soft spots or overly hard spots: the sifted sand distributes the weight evenly over the full height of the bag, unlike coarse sand, which tends to settle toward the bottom and create a hard spot at the bottom and a void at the top.

With punches: the rebound is moderate and clean. The bag moves back on impact and returns without excessive inertia: pleasant for fast combinations (jab-cross-hook) and for working on rhythm. Not as responsive as a speed bag, but that is to be expected on a 70 lbs bag.

With elbows: the filling is dense enough to work rising, horizontal and downward elbows without the bag flying all over the place. For MMA fighters who work elbows regularly, this is an important criterion: some overly soft bags do not hold up well to elbow strikes, which are more pinpointed and concentrated than punches.

With shins (round kicks, low kicks): 70 lbs is the minimum weight for kicks not to send the bag flying too much. On this model, stability is decent: powerful kicks make the bag swing as expected, but there is no uncontrollable swaying. For very powerful kicks (fighters 198 lbs (90 kg) and up hitting at full power), an 80 or 100 lbs bag will be more comfortable.

Suited to MMA or More to Boxing?

The bag’s format (108 cm (43 in) tall, 34 cm (13.5 in) in diameter) is well calibrated for full MMA stand-up work: tall enough to cover everything from the head kick zone down to the low kick, with a diameter consistent with a real opponent’s build for body shots.

This bag works for: jab, cross, hook, uppercut, high and low round kick, low kick, horizontal and rising elbow, body shot. That is the full stand-up game in MMA: everything thrown at a fixed target.

The MMA limits: like any cylindrical heavy bag, it does not simulate the clinch, standing knees to the body (the shape does not lend itself well to them) or ground work. For those, a body bag such as an uppercut bag or a Body Opponent Bag (B.O.B.) mannequin is better suited. The cylindrical heavy bag remains the essential base tool, but not the only tool in a complete MMA gym.

Durability: Does the Nevatear Promise Hold Up?

Nevatear is more resistant than standard vinyl on frequently struck zones: that is the consensus among long-term users. The friction zones (punch impact zone, round kick zone) show less wear at 18-24 months than on an equivalent vinyl bag. No flaking, no cracking, and the surface keeps its look longer.

The seams are the usual point to watch on Everlast bags: the side seams are solid, while the closing seams (bottom and top of the bag) are worth keeping an eye on after 2 years of intensive use. Nothing to rule it out, but regular checks let you plan a repair before an outright tear.

The fiber and sifted sand filling is dense on delivery and stays even over time. Sifted sand does not settle as drastically as raw sand: the risk of a hard “bag bottom” (a classic problem with low-end sand-filled bags) is limited.

Who It’s For, and When to Pass

This bag is for you if: you are setting up a striking space at home and want a heavy bag that lasts without spending a fortune, you train MMA or boxing at home 3 to 5 times a week, you are bothered by chain noise (apartment, townhouse), or you want a ready-to-use bag with the hanging kit included.

This bag is not for you if: you want to work the clinch and standing knees realistically (go for a body bag or a B.O.B.), if you weigh more than 198 lbs (90 kg) and hit at full power every day (an 80-100 lbs bag or a full-grain leather bag will be better suited in the long run), or if you are looking for a freestanding bag that needs no ceiling mount.

Alternatives to consider: RDX F6 KARA (2-in-1 Maya Hide bag, hanging or floor use), Fairtex HB6 (leather bag, higher range), Century Wavemaster XXL (freestanding, no ceiling mount).

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Nevatear and standard vinyl on a heavy bag?

Nevatear is a synthetic material developed by Everlast, denser and more resistant to repeated abrasion than standard vinyl. In practice, Nevatear better resists surface wear on frequently struck zones (punch zone, shin zone), keeps its look longer and is less harsh on gloves and seams. Standard vinyl is cheaper to produce but shows signs of blistering and flaking after 12 to 18 months of intensive use. For regular home use, Nevatear is an investment that pays off over time.

Is the strap system really quieter than a chain?

Yes, noticeably. A metal chain transmits impact vibrations directly to the ceiling and the building’s structure: that is the main source of noise in an apartment. The strap system absorbs part of those vibrations before they reach the ceiling. It does not make the bag silent (the strikes themselves make noise), but the structural vibrations passed on to the neighbors are reduced. For an apartment, that is a serious argument, but still check your building or HOA rules and the strength of your anchor point before installing anything.

Is the 70 lbs bag suitable for heavier fighters or powerful strikes?

The 70 lbs (31.7 kg) is the benchmark weight for home MMA/boxing use for fighters between 132 and 187 lbs (60 and 85 kg). Below 132 lbs (60 kg), it is very good. Above 187 lbs (85 kg) with powerful strikes, the bag will swing more and stability on round kicks will be less satisfying. In that case, the 80 lbs or 100 lbs will be more comfortable and allow cleaner power work. If you weigh more than 198 lbs (90 kg) and regularly hit at full power, go straight for 80+ lbs rather than regretting the 70.
