Fitting out a gym
The floor: tatami, roll-out or puzzle
Tatami in 1 x 2 m mats is the reference floor for MMA, grappling and judo: firm, stable, and it takes throws for years. The cover drives the price: matte PU leather for MMA and BJJ, rice-straw texture for judo. Roll-out mats, 1.55 m wide, unroll in minutes and store against a wall, handy in a room shared with other activities. EVA puzzle mats are the cheapest per m², for boxing, kickboxing, karate and fitness.
Working out the area
Measure the area to cover and divide by 2 to get the number of tatami mats: an 8 x 6 m area, 48 m², takes 24 mats. The form does the maths when you enter the area. For roll-out and puzzle mats, enter the quantity in m² directly.
The walls
Wherever mats meet a wall, pad the wall 1.2 m to 1.8 m high. 40 cm wide panels fit walls with doors and windows, a wall roll covers a long straight wall with no joints.
The striking area
A row of 1.5 m to 1.8 m straight bags serves boxing, kickboxing and MMA. Shaped bags (teardrop, bowling pin, figure eight) add uppercuts and knees, the ground and pound bag covers groundwork. Plan one ceiling anchor per bag, or a wall bracket if the ceiling cannot take a load.

How much does tatami cost for an MMA gym?
In this range, a 1 x 2 m tatami mat costs from €87 to €165 excl. VAT depending on cover, density and thickness, or €43.50 to €82.50 per m². A 50 m² area takes 25 mats.
Tatami, roll-out mats or puzzle mats?
Tatami is the firmest and most durable floor, suited to throws and daily groundwork. Roll-out mats unroll and pack away, ideal for shared spaces. EVA puzzle mats are the cheapest per m², fine for boxing, kickboxing and fitness, less so for repeated falls.
What tatami thickness should I choose?
4 cm is enough for grappling, BJJ and recreational MMA. 5 cm absorbs throws better: judo, wrestling, MMA with heavier fighters. For taekwondo and karate, a puzzle mat of 2.5 cm maximum is the norm.
Which density should I choose?
180 kg/m³ for kids, teens and beginners, 200 kg/m³ for recreational adults, 230 kg/m³ for competitors and Olympic level. The higher the density, the firmer the floor.
Do I need wall padding?
Yes, wherever mats meet a wall: 1.2 m or 1.8 m tall panels, or a one-piece wall roll for long straight walls. It is also where the club logo goes.
