Sean Brady Reveals Staph Infection Behind UFC Vegas 124 Withdrawal, Alexander Volkanovski Reacts

Sean Brady was set to headline a UFC Fight Night card against Gabriel Bonfim on November 7 at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas. This week, the American welterweight explained on a podcast how a routine training day turned into a hospital stay for a staph infection.

A knee that swelled up overnight

Brady said everything felt normal on a Tuesday morning during a regular training session. By that evening, after riding a stationary bike at the gym, his knee had started to swell. By 9 p.m. he could not walk. He initially suspected bursitis, a condition he had dealt with before, before realizing something else was going on.

A diagnosis confirmed by lab culture

Brady went to the hospital the next morning. Doctors had to wait roughly two days for a bacterial culture to grow before confirming staph. He described the wait as simply a matter of giving the bacteria time to show up in the lab results. He spent three days in the hospital on intravenous antibiotics before being sent home and told to rest the knee.

Drainage photos and Alexander Volkanovski’s reaction

On Friday, Brady posted Instagram photos of his knee during a drainage procedure, including a syringe filled with reddish fluid. UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski commented on the post: “Damn that staph got nasty. Hope you well brother.” Middleweight contender Brendan Allen also wished him a speedy recovery in the same thread. The UFC had already confirmed the cancellation on October 30, simply noting that Brady had been removed from the card due to injury.

Volkanovski nearly lost a leg to infection in 2019

Volkanovski’s comment carries extra weight. The Australian champion was himself hospitalized in South America after his decision win over Jose Aldo at UFC 237 in 2019, battling a blood infection that threatened to spread to his tendons and bones. He later said he ran fevers above 40 degrees Celsius and narrowly avoided a complication that could have cost him a leg.

A second infection in three years for Brady

This is not the first time a bacterial infection has pulled Brady out of a fight. In July 2023, a strep infection in his elbow forced him to withdraw from a bout with Jack Della Maddalena ahead of UFC 290. He said at the time that the infection developed into septic bursitis after a blister formed following a training session, and he apologized to Della Maddalena for the late withdrawal.

A welterweight division already in flux

Brady’s withdrawal lands as the welterweight division goes through a turbulent stretch. In late October, Dana White announced an interim title fight between Carlos Prates and Michael Morales for UFC 336 on January 30 in Toronto, after lightweight champion Islam Makhachev declined to move up and defend a welterweight belt before May. Both Brady and Bonfim sat inside the top ten of the UFC’s welterweight rankings released in late October, which had made their matchup one of the more closely watched bouts on the card before it fell apart.

Schedule and broadcast for November 7

Preliminary fights on November 7 start at 5 p.m. ET (2 p.m. PT), with the main card set for 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT). The card streams in the United States on Paramount+. In the United Kingdom and central Europe, the main card falls in the early hours of November 8.

Bonfim left without an opponent for November 7

The UFC rebuilt the November 7 card around a heavyweight main event between Waldo Cortes-Acosta and Johnny Walker. Bonfim, who was coming off a decision win over Belal Muhammad in June after previous wins over Stephen Thompson and Randy Brown, is now without an opponent for the date. Brady, for his part, was coming off a decision win over Joaquin Buckley in May and carries a 9-2 record inside the Octagon. It remains unclear whether the Brady fight will be rescheduled or whether Bonfim will get a new opponent before the end of the year. The full 2026 UFC schedule is available on our dedicated page.
